You will be pleased to know, Ady and J, that after that conversation, I did indeed get a little organized. I bought a storage shelf for the garage room, where I'm "supposed" to keep my storage stuff and moved a bunch of boxes out of the office into storage. I also dumped some stuff and will move, stack and store more as soon as I decide what the heck to do about the computer situation.

I think for the time being, i'll move the new computer out of the living room where it is not functional for all the various reasons and into the office where it really belongs and where it will be useful for things like, say, computing! I'll work on the entertainment side of it later as the budget allows. Then I can focus on cleaning up, decorating and purging as appropriate.
